Not a whole lot to look at on this box. We can have a quick look at the application to see if anything could give us more of a hint. While doing this, it can be worth it to run some other tools. Such as doing some directory fuzzing.
#Website Quick Look
The main website really jumps at us. It's a bleeding heart image, which is a pretty direct nod to the Heartbleed vulnerability (CVE-2014-0160). Even when this box came out, Heartbleed was already widely known, so this isn't exactly subtle. Nothing else is seemingly available so it was a good thing we got feroxbuster running in the background. The rest of the box, the SSL usage and the encode/decode pages, all give further hints that we're on the right track.

Important thing to note is that due to this box being old, and just having a general SSL policy, some tools will refuse to connect to the application. Feroxbuster doesn't tell this to you directly but curl is useful to debug this issue

Looks like our security conscious dev may have encoded this. The direct thought would be to use the provided encoder/decoder to see if this was done locally, however, frankly, this is a red herring.
#CyberChef
CyberChef is a fantastic utility for quick encoding/decoding using multiple different formats, algorithms and styles. It is also fantastic at automatically working out which basic encoding is used. Although we may be able to determine that this is a hex encoding, CyberChef takes away that guess work.
And there we go, the key decoded from hex back into its PEM format. It's still passphrase-encrypted at this point though, so we'll need to grab that separately.

Now that we have the hype key, let's look to see if there are any other pieces of info we need to get onto the application. The notes file contains the following text;

Another good little hint, the encoding/decoding is all happening server side. The key here is that heartbleed leaks chunks of server memory, so anything submitted to that decode endpoint passes through memory and can potentially be recovered by the exploit.

Doing a little bit of research we can find this very handy exploit on exploit-db. This will do all the fancy stuff for us and get us whatever can be found in memory.

This is a super simple root, and we can find the next steps within seconds of being on the box. Step one of enumeration is to see what we have within our home folder, including anything that is hidden.

Two big things jump out instantly, the bash history file is not pointing to /dev/null, and there is a tmux.conf file. Tmux is a terminal multiplexer that can allow users to run and save multiple terminal sessions. However, to keep these sessions alive, they are handled via sockets which if still running could allow us to hop into the session.

Now without pretty much any help required we can utilise the tmux command above to connect to the socket file and resume the previous session.
